The "Megalim center" is a center for learning marine and coastal environment sciences,
located at Kibutz Sdot yam.
Microscopes, water tables, audio-visual equipment and other designated equipment
are available at the center and used for teaching marine and coastal environment
sciences, instructed by a team composed of academics from the marine and environment
fields and students from Marine College in Michmoret.
"Megalim" program
As part of the "Megalim" program, students arrive for a tour day, intended as an
experience-filled introduction to the coastal Israeli Mediterranean environment.
The program confronts students with features of the coast and sea and characteristic
environmental problems. In addition, as part of the curriculum, students acquire
means to help them contribute to preserving the environment in Israel. One of the
main objectives of the program is raising awareness and concerns for the natural
environment.
Within the program, students will learn about:
- The typical ecosystems of the rocky, sandy and estuarine shore in the Mediterranean.
- Adaptations of animals and vegetation to these environments.
- The impact of man on the coastal and marine environment.
- Adaptation of organisms to environmental changes.

- Planktons and invertebrates laboratory
- Sailing and collecting planktons at sea (requires additional fees)
- The activity can be combined with a visit to the Sea Turtles Rescue Center operated
by the Israel Nature and National Parks Protection Authority (requires additional
fees)
The program is suitable for curriculums in primary schools and junior high schools
(sciences, ecological systems, the world of living creatures, earth and the universe,
phenomenons, structures and processes in living creatures) as well as high school
students majoring in biology, environmental studies and the earth sciences.
Instruction for ecological projects
The "Megalim" center offers instructional programs for biotope and ecotope projects,
a biotour programs and an environmental workshop dealing with topics in biology,
ecology and nature preservation.
